Acne (Pimple) Treatment

One of the most common skin conditions, acne, is primarily a disease of the skin's oil glands. Pimples are most commonly seen on the face, where the oil glands are most prevalent in the forehead, nose, and chin. Pimples can also develop on the upper back and chest areas, where oil glands are most abundant. Acne can occur after adolescence or beyond the age of 40 (in late adulthood). It is not solely a condition of the teenage years and can manifest in more severe forms in males.

It can lead to significant cosmetic and serious psychosocial problems, especially due to facial involvement.

How should acne be treated?

Acne can be treated at any age.

Untreated acne can heal with scarring. Acne scars can be cosmetically unappealing.

Some mixtures prepared outside of a doctor's prescription or certain herbal substances obtained from herbalists should not be used.

Patience is required for acne treatment because the duration of treatment may vary depending on the severity of the acne (2, 3 months, or 1 year).

During and after acne treatment, it is essential to consult a physician for suitable skincare products and cosmetics, such as cleansers.

Treatment should be tailored to the severity of the acne. Depending on whether the acne is inflammatory or non-inflammatory, appropriate creams, lotions, antibiotics, vitamin A medications, hormonal medications (for female patients only), minor surgical procedures (such as cauterization or mechanical extraction of blackheads), light therapies, and laser treatments can be administered.
